Mechanical Engineers Private Limited Company

Brief
A new client had split their company into two divisions with two geographically separate sites. The applications being used meant the sites had to be linked within the same domain and both sites needed to be able to connect to either sites data files and had to be able to print to the different geographical sites as well as the local site. The client had one SBS 2003 server and a Remote Desktop Services Server. At this point the server was unable to service the demands from the organisation and the existing link between the sites was unable to cope with the load between the sites and routinely went down.

Resolution
The new servers were virtualised on a VMware hypervisor and the SBS 2003 servers services were migrated to a new server 2008R2 domain controller, file server and print server and a separate Exchange 2010 server. The second site had a new virtualised 2008R2 Server as a second domain controller, and the active directory was organised to create two separate parts so users accessed their resources locally. The Remote Desktop Services server was virtualised and used for remote workers and for workers who occasionally worked away from the main site to reduce load on the link between the sites.
A new on site bonded solution was installed for Internet connectivity with a 99.9% SLA, which provided resilience to the connection and increased the speed of the connection to make the link usable for staff at both sites. The second generation of bonded Internet gateways included QOS and compression which increased the speed of the connection without the need for extra lines.

Outcome
The server infrastructure of the organisation could now cope with the demands of the organisation with plenty of room for growth and expansion. Disaster Recovery was improved with the second domain controller in a geographically separate location and virtualisation allowed offsite backups of the servers to be kept. The resilient link between the two sites now meant both sites could work reliably with downtime now a rarity and due to external factors such as extended power outages. Even in the event of a catastrophic disaster at either site, total time to recover could be carried out in one day with same day configured server delivery that could be provided.

Charity

Brief
Resolve an unreliable SBS 2000 server and organic network disrupting the charities work with network resources crashing, emails not arriving and Internet to slow to be usable.

Resolution
The whole building was cabled with Cat5e into a small cabinet. A new SBS 2003 server was installed and the server 2000 migrated to the new SBS2003 server.
Update 1: Servers migrated to SBS 2008.
Update 2: The whole organisations network has been moved to hosted desktops with applications including Sage all being run in UK Tier III ISO 9001, 14001 and 27001 certified data centres. Emails have been migrated to a separate hosted Exchange service accessed from the hosted Desktops. The hosted Desktops environment also hosts the organisations client database.

Outcome
The charity has gone from an organisation almost crippled by a poor infrastructure to one that can access their network from anywhere, anytime and allows the use of the charities equipment or BYOD’s to securely and safely access the confidential data. Security is now held in ISO 27001 Data Security certified data centres and helps the organisation to adhere to data protection needed by any organisation funded by local government.

Educational Academy Trust

Brief
The school had one room of Apple Macs sharing an ADSL connection, and wanted to expand the network to cover the whole school with each classroom having a desktop computer, 4 computer suites, a library suite, 5 laptop trollies.

Resolution
The whole school had structured cabling installed with two comms rooms, situated to reduce the amounts of hops between any satellite cabs and the main backbone switches. All buildings were connected by GB fibre back to the servers and desktops connected at 100MB. The school was cabled with Cat5e to the desktops, fibre between the backbone switches and Cat6 to the servers. The servers were virtualised with a domain controller in each of the main comms rooms for redundancy in the event of a catastrophic disaster to one of the buildings, and to help logon speeds for students and staff when logons at the start of lessons happen all at once. An Exchange server, file server, SQL server (MIS Server) and print server were also installed.
Update: 10GB to server and 10GB backbone upgraded. Meru Wireless Network installed.

Outcome
The school had a reliable robust network that could cope with the unique loads an educational organisation puts on a network. Problems are quick to isolate, diagnose and resolve. Backups and replication of virtual servers are possible between separate buildings and online/offsite backups of MIS SQL and critical files carried out.

Educational Private School

Brief
The school had a very poor implementation of structured cabling with multiple switches, unshielded Cat5e run externally resulting in unreliable speed and packet loss causing data corruption and a system unusable in the time constraints of lessons. The school had one server 2003 running as a file server.

Resolution
We started again with the cabling with one cabinet centrally located. The whole school was cabled with Cat5e. A new server was installed as a domain controller, file server and print server. A separate server was installed with Exchange 2003. Wireless was installed on the top floor for the students boarding at the school.
Update: Servers migrated to Server 2008R2 and Exchange 2010.

Outcome
The school had a network that was reliable, fast enough to cope with the demands of the educational institution, providing fast access to resources, allowing the use of network resources and the Internet during lessons and bring a school email address to all staff and students. The new network also gave the school confidence to invest and implement an MIS system for student records.

The most professional IT support provider we have used

We have used Nova IT Solutions since July 2015, having been left in limbo after our previous support provider folded at short notice. We did trail another local provider for a few months but they unfortunately did not provide the level of support expected. The transition to Nova IT was handled seamlessly by Roland and his team.
